Mia Björn design

Maria Björnståhl

My name is Maria Björnståhl, founder of Mia Björn Design. I live in Gothenburg, but my roots are in the beautiful plains of the swedish east coast. I have a background in behavioural science, and alongside my interest in people, my other great passion is textile craft. Creativity has always been part of my life in different ways, but since 2018 it has mainly taken the form of textile making. I primarily work with knitting, but also with sewing and embroidery.

A recurring theme in my work is my love of experimenting with different styles, materials, and colours. This creates a wide variation in my expression, and I enjoy surprising both myself and others. In 2022, I began studying within the textile field, driven by a growing desire to work with textile craft. At the same time, I felt a strong wish to contribute to a more sustainable world—both on a small and a larger scale—by placing slow craft and sustainable materials at the centre.

Over the course of three years, I trained in textiles and knitting, which has led me to where I am today: creating knitting patterns and selling handmade garments and accessories. Through my knitting patterns, I hope to share the joy of making, and through the products I create, I hope to contribute to a more beautiful everyday life and a more sustainable way of consuming. That making things by hand can bring both calm and joy at the same time feels like a small, fascinating mystery to me. Just imagine that we can create such useful and beautiful objects from something as simple as two needles and a strand of yarn.

I believe this sense of satisfaction is deeply rooted in us—it’s something we need in order to feel well and experience joy in life. To be able to contribute to that is my greatest joy.
